Why Is There a 4–5 Week Interval Between Microneedling Treatments?

2 min read

Many people wonder why microneedling sessions are not performed more frequently than every 4 to 5 weeks. The answer lies in how the skin repairs and renews itself after each treatment.

Microneedling triggers a controlled healing response in the skin. This activates the skin’s natural repair mechanisms, including cell regeneration and the production of collagen and elastin.

How Does Skin Renewal Work?

The skin is constantly renewing itself. On average, this cycle takes around 28 days. During this time, skin cells move from the deeper layers toward the surface, where they are eventually replaced by new cells.

But the improvements achieved with microneedling go deeper than this natural surface renewal. The most important changes happen in the deeper layers of the skin.

What Happens After Microneedling?

After a microneedling treatment, the skin goes through three phases:

  • Phase 1 (first few days): healing of the microchannels and calming of the skin

  • Phase 2 (1 to 3 weeks): active production of collagen and elastin

  • Phase 3 (3 to 6 weeks): remodeling and strengthening of the skin structure

It is especially during this last phase that the skin becomes firmer, smoother, and more even.

Why a 4–5 Week Interval?

The 4–5 week interval is essential because:

  • the skin needs time to fully recover

  • collagen production is a multi‑week process

  • the skin becomes stronger after each session

  • treating too soon can overload or irritate the skin

  • results build gradually and consistently

Each new treatment builds on the progress of the previous one.

What Happens If You Treat Too Soon?

If microneedling is performed too frequently:

  • the skin does not get enough recovery time

  • irritation or sensitivity may occur

  • collagen production becomes less efficient

  • overall skin quality may not improve optimally

What Happens If You Wait Too Long?

If the intervals are too long:

  • part of the accumulated effect diminishes

  • it takes longer to achieve visible results

  • the treatment plan becomes less efficient

Conclusion

The ideal 4–5 week interval is based on the skin’s natural healing and renewal cycle. This timing allows the skin to recover fully and build new collagen, ensuring the best and most long‑lasting results.

Extra tip

For optimal results, microneedling is usually performed as a course of 3 to 4 treatments, followed by maintenance 3 to 4 times per year.
